PC Support for EPICS




Dear folks,
For your information, and for your comments on relative priorities.
I'm most enthusiastic about those developments that will improve
all platforms, such as CA support for large arrays.

Hi Tim,
	We're starting a real push to support the PC environment. If you
have any resource (read - people or money) that you want to put into this
let me know. We would also like to get the beamlines that are already doing 
this involved.

	Here's our preliminary plan:
Development Plan:

Channel Access:
 1) Port the existing server to a Pentium
 2) Port - portable server to WNT
 3) Port - portable server to vxWorks
 4) Replace existing server with portable server
 5) Provide large array support
 6) Provide caching client
 7) Provide name cache on client side
 8) Remove excess library layer - db_access
 9) Provide fence post monitors
10) Provide connectionless clients
11) Move conversions to client side

Database
 1) Port database engine to Windows NT
 2) Develop drivers for Pentium running vxWorks
	Allen-Bradley
	IP
	ModBus
	RTP
 3) Port drivers to windows NT

Database Configuration
 1) Develop/acquire a windows graphical configuration tool
 2) Develop/acquire a relational database configuration tool

Data visualization
 1) Evaluate the cost to Run the current X-based DM under NT
 2) Evaluate the available library packages
 3) Write a display manager editor for vector control and display
 4) Add plotting capability

Archive Engine
 1) Provide frequency based / UNIX
 2) Provide monitor based / UNIX
 3) Provide sample set / UNIX
 4) Provide software scope / UNIX
 5) Provide cleint/server interface to archive data
 6) Provide UNIX viewer - data through time
 7) Provide UNIX viewer - sample set data
 8) Provide UNIX viewer - software scope
 9) Provide configuration tool for configuring/changing archive
10) Provide viewers under windows NT

Provide an EPICS training center -
 1) Set up EPICS training either commercially or at LANL - once/month
