Selection of a new PowerPC CPU Board

------------- Begin Forwarded Message -------------

Gentlemen,

I have been tasked with recommending a new standard CPU board to
eventually
replace the Motorola MVME167/177 boards currently used at APS when more
processing power is required. In order to help me do this I would
appreciate
your opinions of what you think the requirements of this board should be
from
your experience. This questionnaire should take no more than a few
minutes to
complete. Please forward it to anyone else who you think could provide
valuable input into this recommendation process.

Responses by January 22nd please.

Thank-you,

- Andrew Johnson (APS-ASD) <anj@aps.anl.gov>

Some basic assumptions:
	VME CPU Board with System Controller (slot 1) capability
	Onboard RAM (128Mb Max or more) & basic I/O (Serial, Ethernet)
	VxWorks/Tornado Board Support Package available
	CPU will be a PowerPC processor of some kind
	Must be significantly faster than MVME177 CPUs
	Built by a reputable manufacturer
	Commercial standard (not ruggedized or mil spec etc.)

Using one of the following codes 0 through 5 and X,
	0 = Forbidden,
	1 = Undesirable,
	2 = Unlikely to be used/needed,
	3 = Might be useful,
	4 = Highly desirable,
	5 = Essential
	X = Don't know/care

please rate these features:

 [ ]	VME64
 [ ]	5 Row VME64 extension connectors
 [ ]	100 Mbps Ethernet port
 [ ]	More than 1 serial port
 [ ]	4 Serial ports
 [ ]	Serial & Net I/O pin-compatible with MVME162/167/177
 [ ]	On-board SCSI port (Ultra-, Wide- etc)
 [ ]	Other I/O on-board (keyboard, mouse, floppy etc)
 [ ]	Uses the latest PowerPC 750 CPU
 [ ]	Level 2 Cache
 [ ]	Speed matters more than price
 [ ]	1 PCI-bus (PMC) I/O slot
 [ ]	2 PCI-bus (PMC) I/O slots
 [ ]	VxWorks/Tornado BSP written by Wind River Systems
 [ ]	Range of similar boards available
 [ ]	Motorola board

Any other requirements, or features you need or believe would be
generally useful from a new CPU board:
