Position available





The Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS) is seeking a software
specialist to work at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National
Laboratory.  The position will involve approximately 75% work for the
GeoSoilEnviroCARS (GSECARS) sector and 25% work for CARS in general.

This position will involve both system administration and software 
development.  The GSECARS computer environment consists of 2 Windows NT
servers, approximately 20 Windows NT workstations, 2 Unix workstations, 1 VMS
workstation, 6 VME crates running vxWorks/EPICS, and 2 Allen-Bradley PLCs.

The system administration duties will include the following, most on a CARS-
wide basis:

- Purchase, installation and maintenance of software packages on a Windows
  NT domain and Unix workstations.

- Regular backups on WNT, Unix and VMS systems.

- Purchase, installation and maintenance of computer hardware, including 
  network hardware, printers and data acquisition equipment.

- Assisting and training users with beamline data acquisition, control and 
  data analysis software.

- Assisting CARS staff with computer setup and software packages on WNT
  and Unix systems.

The software development duties for GSECARS will include:

- Integration of third-party software into the beamline data acquisition and 
  control system.

- EPICS database and record support development, including device support
  for new data acquisition modules.

- Maintenance and upgrades of the Allen-Bradley PLC-based beamline 
  equipment protection system

- Assisting development of data analysis software in collaboration with
  beamline scientists.

The position will be based at the APS at Argonne National Laboratory with 
occasional trips to the University of Chicago required.  The position will 
report to Mark Rivers as supervisor of the GSECARS computer group.

The position requires a college degree and at least 3 years of experience with
one or more of the computer systems listed.  Experience with data acquisition
and control systems is desireable.  Salary will be commensurate with education
and experience.
