Bipolar drives are required to drive 2-phase (i.e. 4-wire) stepper motors.
Many small inexpensive motors are of this type.  For example, the motors which
Newport now supplies as standard equipment on most of their stages (the former
Klinger line) are 2-phase motors.  We have purchased the ACS micro-stepper
drives to run these, but only because these drives are bipolar.  If ACS
offered a linear (non-chopper) bipolar full/half step driver we would use that
instead.
