OK, you convinced me.

With regard to Mark's suggestions - 

The 1uF capacitors sound like a good idea - we'd have done that anyway - one
suggestion is that we might get away with 0.1uF caps instead and could
therefore use non-polarized ones which might be more robust.

The front panel connection sounds potentially useful, perhaps with a PCB
mounted rotary switch to select one or two of the lines to connect to LEMO
connectors on the module panel - there will be probably be plenty of spare
room on the PCB since the basic connections are so simple.  Should we include
line driver circuits?

The step/direction <-> CW/CCW conversion circuitry has the problem that the
pinouts for different motor drivers may be different to the StepPak, so you'd
need other wiring anyway. 

How much different are the connections to the various OMS driver cards?
Do we need opto-isolation?
