Dear Colleague,

The following represents an updated version of the First Circular for the
ICALEPCS 95 Conference. It is being sent now to provide an update on the
status of the program, and to induce those who have not yet filed a preliminary
statement of interest to do so.

Announcement, First Circular, and Call for Abstracts

The biennial ICALEPCS conference, the most recent of which took
place in Berlin, Germany in 1993, will be held in Chicago, Illinois,
USA October 30 through November 3, 1995.

The conference will cover the whole field of control systems and
operations of accelerators, telescopes, fusion reactors, and physics
experiments. Both hardware and software of control systems will be
considered, together with aspects of operations which use them.
Specific areas of concentration, when comparing with previous
conferences in this series, will be hardware, operations, and non-
accelerator control systems.

The emphasis will be on modern developments and innovative
solutions to problems. The oral program will consist of invited and
contributed talks. The topics of the oral sessions are set forth below.
There will also be poster sessions, and sufficient time has been
allotted for all participants to view the posters.

Sessions and Abstracts:

The International Scientific Advisory Committee has agreed on the
following set of sessions for oral presentations; some are plenary
sessions while others will be held in parallel.

% Opening

% Mondo ICALEPCS - Summary presentations on the various
disciplines represented at the conference.

% Hardware products

% Object Oriented Code and Databases

% Computer Networking

% Controls for Physics Experiments

% Accelerator Status Reports

% Controls for Telescopes

% Commercial Software and Software Standards

% Control Theory and Advanced Techniques

% Software Sharing

% Backplane and Field Busses

% Industrial Utilization and Integration

% Models Integrated with Controls

% Operational Aspects

% Databases

% Distributed Computing

% Wide World of Controls - Control work in fields other than those of
the conference

% Closing

The deadline for abstracts submitted for oral presentation has past.
However specific examples of work fitting well into the above
categories may in some cases still be acceepted, at the discretion of
the session organizers. Abstracts for poster presentations or publish
only status are due by September 1.

Abstracts may be submitted on paper, on floppy disk, via electronic
mail, or by direct entry onto our World Wide Web server. The
guidelines to be followed are that the abstract must be written in
such a font as to be readable after reduction to 64% of original size,
and fit within an area 15 cm high by 9 cm wide after such reduction.
All abstracts will be made available on the Web and will also be
bound into a paper volume available at the conference. Paper
submissions will be made available electronically via optical
scanning. We shall make paper copies from electronic submissions,
but may have difficulty if non-standard word processors or esoteric
features are used. For direct submission via the Web, go to the
Conference page (listed below) and follow the instructions given. For
papers submitted for the Proceedings, as opposed to abstracts, there
will be more stringent criteria, imposed in the interest of uniformity.
These will be detailed in the Second Circular.

Conference Information

% It is intended that a wide range of computing facilities, with
appropriate networking, be available throughout the conference. The
facilities will be adequate for computer operation and user interface
demonstrations to be integrated into oral (or poster) presentations;
abstracts which make use of them are particularly welcomed.

% The primary method of communication prior to ICALEPCS will be
electronic. Transmissions from the organizers will be kept more up to
date via electronic media than would be possible via post. Similarly,
for transmission of information and requests to us electronic means
are preferred, but are of course not mandatory.

% The Proceedings of the conference will be published, and the
primary means of its distribution will be CD ROM. Paper copies will
be supplied when requested, but it is presumed that most attendees
will prefer the more compact medium.

% The conference will be held in the Swissotel, Chicago. This striking
and modern facility is located close to both Lake Michigan and the
central Chicago business and shopping district. There will be a special
convention rate of approximately $104 per room per night for
ICALEPCS attendees; this rate will not exceed the US DOE maximum
for Chicago. Most conference activities in the hotel will take place on
a single floor and in close proximity to each other; the potential for
productive interaction among all participants has been maximized.

% There will be an industrial exhibit in the hotel November 1-3.
Several vendors have already expressed interest in participating.

% Tours of Argonne National Laboratory, in particular of the
Advanced Photon Source, and of Fermilab will be given on October
31.

% The conference fee has been set at $465 (US). A nominal student
fee of $50 has been established.

% Social activities - There will be an opening reception the evening of
October 29, and a banquet November 2. Both will be included in the
conference fee (except for students, where the nominal fee does not
include the banquet). The banquet will be held in the Art Institute of
Chicago, and attendance will include viewing a special exhibit of
Monet paintings. An exciting companions' program will also be
offered.

% Limited financial assistance is available for qualified attendees
whose home institutions cannot afford the full costs.

% It is intended to videotape all conference sessions and telecast
many via the MBONE teleconferencing system within 24 hours.
